Mushrooms!

Redid two paintings that I posted earlier, and painted two more.  The best part of doing this series is that I got to cook 'em and eat 'em!

FALL 2011: NOT OIL!!

The first is a figure drawing distortion piece, the second is my final for figure drawing, the third is the thumbnail for it which I like a lot more than the finished piece because I like the energy in it, the fourth is a figure drawing assignment of two figures in one piece, the fifth, sixth, and seventh are figure drawings done at the pod.

Fall 2011: OIL!

Another semester of TAD down, two more to go. This past semester was definitely really hard, and very focused on oil painting. I really need to update my blog on a regular basis to avoid large art dumps. For this post, they are all oil paintings!

The first one is a plein air, the second is a pear study painted with the help of Josh George, the third is my final for still life painting, and it's my biggest painting yet although I cannot remember the size at the moment, the fourth is an hour long quick painting of sardines under a light (so the smell will make you paint faster), the fifth is a figure painting using the Zorn palette, the sixth is a painting of a sculpture that Jon Foster made, and the seventh is a figure painting of my good friend Kaitlin Demayo in her Hans Solo costume.

Oil Painting and Master Copies

Wow, I haven't posted anything here in a while!  I've been busy, but that's not an excuse!!

I changed my blog's name from "hodgeepodgee.blogspot.com" to "juliahodgesillustration.blogspot.com".  I also got a tumblr, but I have yet to figure it out.  It's at "juliahodgesillustration.tumblr.com".

I've decided that I'm going to post more of what I do, not just stuff I'm proud of.  I've had a ton of failures, but those failures are very important to me and I learn a lot more from them than my successes.  It's also an effort to be more transparent.

In the Fine Art and Illustration branches of TAD, the students have done a lot of master copies.  I copied these from copies that I got printed to size (makes everything so much easier, copying from a small screen to a large painting just doesn't translate for me), and then looking at the computer copy to get what I couldn't get from the print, mostly the colors.

Photojournalist Comic

This is an assignment for my Visual Narrative class with George Pratt and Marshall Vandruff. This has been the most fun assignment in all of TAD. The assignment was to use photo reference from a list of famous photojournalists and create an 8 page comic out of the photos with cropping the photos in your own way or combining photos together. The photojournalists include Dorothea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz, Frank Hurley, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Keith Carter, Euroda Welty, Manual Bravo Alvarez, and more. These images are 12 x 15, ink with a brush pen on bristol.

Some Figures that are TINY!!

I love tiny formats, one is a tiny figure painting in oil and the others are in a tiny sketchbook with black and white ink on mid tone paper. :)
